Best Cheap Underlayment for Laminate Flooring

Best Cheap Underlayment for Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring has been a very popular flooring choice in the recent years. Underlayment can provide many benefits for laminate like, sound reduction, compression resistance, smoothing out subfloor imperfections, and more. We have created this list of the three best cheap underlaymens for laminate flooring to help you find the best underlayments for the most affordable price.

1. Duo Foam Standard Foam Underlayment

Duo Foam is a durable polyethylene foam underlayment that works well with laminate and engineered flooring. The underlayment does a great job reducing noise and provides cushion for the floors. It is even moisture resistant, but any vapor emission rate over (3lbs./100sq.ft./24hrs) will require a 6 mil moisture barrier. If you are unsure about your vapor emission rate then you should perform a calcium chloride test (we’ll discuss further below). This product is at the number one spot because the material it is made out of is higher quality than most competitors in this price range.

Manufacturer Warranty: 10 Year Limited Warranty

2. Roberts Unison Premium 2-in-1 Underlayment

Unision 2-in-1 is also a polyethylene foam underlayment. This underlayment does a good job at absorbing sound from impacts. It features a moisture barrier, but the water transmission rate is not specified. We have placed this underlayment at number two because it has been known to tear easily during installation.

Manufacturer Warranty: No

3. Dekorman 2mm Blue Foam Underlayment

Dekorman 2mm Blue Foam has the lowest price on the list. It provides sufficient sound and impact absorption for the price. Since it is made out of polystyrene and not polyethylene, it falls behind in the moisture category. Dekorman 2mm Blue Foam does not claim to have a moisture barrier and does not specify the water vapor transmission rate of the foam.

Manufacturer Warranty: 90 Day

  1. What are the main differences between cheaper underlayments and more expensive underlayments?

    • Hey Danny, there are about 3 main differences.

      1. More expensive underlayments will be far more durable. They will hold up better during installation and not compress over time underneath the flooring.
      2. Clean air certifications. Cheaper underlayments rarely have these. More expensive underlayments will have something like a GreenGuard Gold Certification so you know you aren’t putting anything toxic in your home.
      3. Customer Support. Cheap underlayments have been known to arrive without directions and can be difficult to find. If someone is reselling cheap underlayments from overseas you will not likely have a customer service team to call either. Where a more expensive underlayment from a reputable brand will have customer support and back up their warranties.

If your budget only permits a cheaper underlayment, make sure to go with a reputable company. MP Global, FloorMuffler, Pergo, etc.
